People in Japan have known how to lighten skin for many years. In addition
to the white face paint that was used by the geisha, other skin-whitening products were used historically to
achieve the lightest complexion possible.
Some of the face paint was safe. Some of the skin-whiteners were probably safe.
Others were not. The same is true, today.
Safe Skin Lighteners Safe - Others Not
The cosmetic industry may have changed, but there are still many similarities. The face
paint originally used by the geisha contained lead. Eventually, the geisha realized that the paint was toxic
to the skin’s health and caused health problems in later life, including back problems. A rice powder
formulation was developed in the early 1900s as a result.
Makeup use in other parts of the world did not become popular until movies became popular.
The regular use of makeup by women in the US and other countries is largely attributed to Max Factor, a movie
makeup artist. The pan-cake formula that he developed is still sold and manufactured, despite the fact that
it contains talc, which has been linked to various kinds of cancer.
Safe But Who Wants to Use It?
In attempting to learn how to lighten skin without the use of makeup, it was found that droppings from a bird called
the Japanese bush warbler was effective. Although it may sound disgusting, it was probably
safe.
Unsafe Skin Whiteners
In later years, mercury and hydroquinone were found to be effective. Although the use of
either has been banned in the European Union and other countries, skin-whitening products containing them are still
manufactured in the US and sold over the internet.
Other ingredients found in skin-whiteners include bleach and mild acids. According to
research conducted by the Environmental Working Group, there are at least 50 highly hazardous whiteners on the
market, today.
Safe Skin Lightener
If you’re like most people, you want to learn how to lighten skin safely.
There is a compound that is very effective for that purpose. Not only is it effective, it is also very
safe. It is a plant extract that is actually soothing. It can be used to relieve irritation and
inflammation.
The plant goes by many names throughout the world. It is largely thought of as a
weed. Nut grass is one of the most common names for it. The active compounds are extracted from the
root and mixed with nourishing emollients.
It was a European manufacturer that came up with how to lighten skin safely by working with the nut grass
plant. Are European ingredients better than those produced in the US?
People argue that US technology is just as good, if not better. While that may be true, US
cosmetic manufacturers have had different goals and fewer regulations regarding the safety of
ingredients.
Any company, anywhere in the world can produce safe cosmetics. In order to help us find
them, a coalition of environmental and public safety organizations created the Campaign for Safe
Cosmetics.
Signers of the “Compact for Safe Cosmetics” are committed to helping us learn how to lighten skin
safely. Nut-grass root is the ingredient they use.
